DISTINGUISHED LADIES AND GENTLEMEN…..
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all as this very important program is finally taking place today. This is one of our most cherished annual programs. Teaching and learning can never occur when a teacher is not available. A teacher is an asset to an environment and a potential for development and growth. The need for teacher’s continuous professional training can never be enough. A bad engineer or doctor can kill one, two or three people but a bad teacher destroys a generation. A bad teacher is a slow poison. Just consider the current bad handwriting prevalent among our students. It is most likely the result of a teacher not doing his/her job during the student’s tender age of handwriting lesson. Now it is telling on the student.
Teacher’s forum is a time where we teachers refresh ourselves with necessary tools for the work. Nobody is a body of knowledge. We continue to learn on daily basis. One of the qualities of our teachers here is that they are always disposed to learn. Some of the benefits of our constant on-going formation on teachers include:
1. Healthy ICT program and on-line result management.
2. Regular attendance to class
3. Proper use of both statutory and non-statutory materials.
4. Healthy teacher-student relationship
5. Proper dressing code
6. Motivation of staff and unity among staff
With the above developments in place, the college has continued to rise from strength to strength turning out to be one of the leading schools around. There is serious infrastructural development; students’ performance in both internal and external examination are highly encouraging; our extra-curricular activities are also excellent. Our religious and moral programs are second to none compared to other schools. These have indeed transformed the students of our college such that it is no longer ‘to be educated’ that is being talked about in the college, but ‘to be formed’. We practice holistic formation because our teachers are always being prepared to face the challenges of Change.
Educational industry is one that requires serious and unalloyed attention. This is because the future of any nation is dependent on their quality of education. It is already a wise saying that “if you say education is costly; try ignorance”. In this college, efforts towards the availability of quality education are a priority. Infact, our current slogan is no longer SPACO- GREAT but SPACO- ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
Teachers are the eye of every school. A school with quality teachers is already prepared for teaching and learning. So teachers are major stake holders in this mission for quality education. So far, the joint effort of our government teachers, mission teachers N-Power teachers and Corpers are yielding the desired result. But there is still room for improvement. More can still be done. That is why, for us to prepare well for this new session, we decided to pull some of our experienced educationist to enlighten us more on the technicalities for this special job. Teachers’ Responsibilities in School Management (lecture 1) is one of the first major steps to effective teaching; the need for good Management of Continuous Assessment (lecture 2) can never be over-emphasized, especially now that WAEC is giving it a priority (CAS 30%, WAEC 70%).
Now we are in the era of high technological and ICT development. Our college is already a Centre for computer learning. We are already managing a school website (lecture 3) and our students are accessing their on-line. Our service providers (Linkskool computers) are also here to update us on quality service delivery.
How I wish our teachers will utilize this rare opportunity by calling it a duty. We know that anything worth doing is worth well. This profession is indeed a special one because we are sharing in the mission of Christ the Great teacher. If we are able to take in what our resource persons will give us today, I am quite sure that the best will come out from us for our dear students who are our future leaders.
Once again, I welcome you all. Feel at home and enjoy the day.
Rev. Fr. Chijioke Eze (Principal)
