It is a great honor and privilege for me to present this address. This is not the first time I am performing this type of function, but I will not take the possibility of today for granted. A Latin phrase from book 1, chapter 19, of the “Imitation of Christ” by the German cleric Thomas a Kempis reads “homo proponit, sed Deus disponit” (man propose, God dispose). It means that human beings can make any plans they want, but it’s God that decides their success or failure. I give thanks to almighty God. He is the planner and executor; we are mere unworthy instruments. To him be glory and praise for ever and ever amen.

Today is another unique day in this great center of formation. Today we are recording another practical proof that this community is alive and active. It is said that “you don’t need to be perfect. Just be better than you were yesterday”. It is also good to note that “winners are not people who never fail but people who never quit”. We are continually encouraged because our little effort always produce tremendous result. Determination as we know is the key to success.

Today we are celebrating a tripartite event: first is the orientation of our 2017/18 new students. It is said that if there is no graduation, there will be no matriculation. Life is also mainly about birth and death. In this college we are privileged to maintain an unbroken tradition of experiencing admission and graduation each academic year. In spite of our new policy of complete boarding, we still recorded appreciable enrollment. We introduced this policy to make formation more holistic, student-centered and result oriented. Our program is designed in such a way that discerning student will reap unlimited benefit towards empowerment and self-realization. By next session this college will, hopefully be a complete boarding school.

It will interest you to know that in our effort to improve our formation we introduced one week orientation for our JS 1 student before actual commencement of the academic session. We have already done it for this current students. We use opportunity of that program to relax their minds, expose the school to them and drill them on how to be college students. Today is just an official acknowledgement that our orientation has already been done but most importantly to welcome our new parents into the noble parents forum of the college. Dear parents, we thank you for choosing our college and believing in us for your sons. We’ll continue to play our part and hope you will not be disappointed. Our college is a training ground, it is not a relaxation joint. It is a place where we help our students to imbibe deep sacrifice, discipline, hard work and spirituality. Please dear parents remember that this training is a joint effort of us the staff and you the parents. We have our rules and regulations which copies of it are with all the students. Reward and punishment are well practiced in our college.

Our interest in holistic formation also led us to introduce auxiliary staff for the proper management of our hostels. We also introduced the mentoring program for our JS 1 students. There are divided into 12 groups of 10 students each. Each group has a mentor. Our intention is for the mentors to assist them in their day to day life and academic work. So far we are recording a lot of progress. My dear new students, once again I want to sincerely welcome you into the noble family of SPACO Emene. You already know that I love you and will continue to love you. Feel at home and enjoy my smooth administration.

Second in our celebration today is the solemn unveiling and launching of the 6th edition of our college magazine, THE PATRIARCH. Born some six years ago it came, as the name implies (Patriarch means founding father), now to be the leader of college magazines. We have been consistent year by year with captivating and inspiring themes and cover pages. Our magazine is unique in the sense that students are the real owners; 95% of inputs each year come from them and finally they also sell copies of it mainly during Christmas holidays. Proceeds from the magazine have helped to increase the IGR of the school in no small measure. Each year we make an average profit of 500,000 naira. And this we plunge into the on-going new face of SPACO Emene.

The magazine have also increased the academic performances of our students as they struggle to write articles and organize the production. As we will soon see, the editorial crew from A to Z are students. The theme of this current publication will surely meet your expectation; it is very timely, educative, entertaining and empowering. The launching of this magazine will help us to continue making this place a decent center for formation. For instance we plan to use proceeds from today’s generosity to complete the construction of a big septic tank for the 12 toilets at our newly built hostel. The work is estimated to cost 1.2million naira because of the challenging nature of the area. We plead that you give us your generous support and kindness.

Finally, third in our celebration today is the inauguration and award of ANTHONY AKAEZE PRIZE for the best graduating student in St Patrick College Emene. This program is first of its kind in the history of this great college. Anthony Akaeze is a noble SPACO Old boy currently making waves as the Senior Associate Editor of the prestigious TELL Magazine. I noticed his interest in his alma mater when he paid an unscheduled visit a couple of years ago and since then we have been on talking terms. And now he has come up with this noble project that will make our graduating students study harder for an excellent result. The project is geared towards picking the best student in WAEC and appreciating him with a cash award of thirty thousand naira. This divine project will be inaugurated today and the best student in this year’s WAEC will emerge and collect his prize. It will interest you to note that we recorded 99% success in WAEC this year. So far some of them have already gained admission in the universities and polytechnics. My dear brother Anthony we thank you and pray God to reward your effort with more prosperity. We congratulate the awardee and wish him the best in his future endeavor.

Finally my dear brothers and sisters kindly relax and enjoy the day. We have much that will keep you entertained. Please do not be in a hurry to go because your presence is our greatest delight. Welcome and have a good time.
